When it comes to providing extracurricular opportunities for their children, today’s parents have more options than we can count. From dance classes, music lessons and gymnastics to science camps, scouting and organized sports, the list goes on! At MP USA, our favorite enrichment activity for kids is, of course, martial arts. As its popularity continues to increase, its benefits are becoming more well known, especially for young girls. If you want to raise a strong, confident daughter, we’d love to help. Our conversation today is about empowering future female leaders through martial arts in Ogden Utah.
How Girls Benefit From Martial Arts Training
At MP USA, we talk a lot about how children and families benefit from martial arts training. Aside from improving physical and mental health, training in a martial art like Merpati Putih (MP) can help us achieve better brain health, avoid procrastination and strengthen family bonds.
Girls, especially, benefit from martial arts training because it can help them develop self-confidence and leadership skills. Martial arts can also empower girls with self-defense skills that can serve them throughout their lives. As much as we are saddened by the need for a #metoo movement in our society, it’s critical that we equip our daughters with tools to protect themselves in an often frightening world. At MP USA, we love watching young girls learn and grow, and it’s important to give them a head start. Between the ages of 7 and 11, they’re in an ideal stage of development to begin and advance in their training. We asked one of our junior instructors, Sydney, about her experience training and teaching martial arts, here is what she had to say:
“I think that, as a female, it’s important to be able to carry yourself in a way that shows others that you know what you want and what you don’t want, and a lot of that has to do with self-confidence. Personally, just knowing that I can defend and handle myself in a multitude of situations has given me the confidence to take risks to help achieve my goals. I tend to think a lot of the time that if I can confidently defend myself against a grown man, I can most definitely give a speech at an academic competition, or do anything else that I don’t think I’m entirely confident in. People see that confidence, too, and they know I’m serious about what I do, which generally prevents them from trying to waste my time.”
How Girls Can Change the World
Have you heard the story of Malala Yousafzai, a young woman from Pakistan who was shot by the Taliban on October 9, 2012? Before she was 12-years-old, Malala had already become an international human rights advocate, campaigning fearlessly on behalf of educational rights for girls. “I believe we will see every girl in school in my lifetime,” her website says.
What about Alexandra Scott? Having been diagnosed with neuroblastoma shortly after her first birthday, this brave little girl from Connecticut started selling lemonade to raise money for cancer research when she was just four-years-old. By the time of her death in 2004, she had raised more than $1 million. Today, the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation lives on.
