It comes as no surprise that participating in martial arts boosts physical health, but did you know that it’s also good for your mind? Increasing brain health with MP USA in Ogden Utah is a goal being achieved in every class we hold, both in our youth and adult programs. What makes our programs most exciting is that the growth our students experience is progressive. Also, as we train together to achieve individual strength, awareness, leadership and focus, we develop skills that can enhance every aspect of our lives.
What the Research Says
In February 2018, Ashleigh Johnstone, a PhD researcher in cognitive neuroscience at Bangor University in North Wales, UK, published an article on TheConversation.com about how martial arts can improve your attention span and focus. In May, she published a similar article on Independent.co.uk about how martial arts can also boost your cognition and improve your mental health.
“As several scientists are now looking into the links between emotional well-being and physical health,” she wrote, “it’s vital to note that martial arts has been shown to improve a person’s emotional wellbeing too.”
Here are some of the ways martial arts can give your brain an incredible workout:
- Studies have shown that children who participate in martial arts programs do better in math.
- Martial arts practice can help youth be more alert and improve their social and behavioral skills. This includes helping them become better equipped to transfer aggression into appropriate outlets.
- Older adults who are involved in martial arts often experience an improved working memory. Researchers have also found links between martial arts practice and decreased incidence of depression.
- Whatever your age, martial arts practice can help you achieve better focus and self-discipline and improve your self-esteem.
“While it could be argued that martial arts simply are among many activities that can lead to better health,” Johnstone wrote, “what we and other researchers have found is that their practice is one of those rare crossovers that helps significantly improve the brain just as much as the body.”
MaryAnn M., one of our adult students in Dasar 1, has been practicing Merpati Putih with us for 6 months. She has appreciated how being involved with MP USA has helped her with memory function and meditation. “MP USA has been transformative for me in reducing major panic attacks thanks to the meditations I have learned,” she said.
Another of our students, Sarah D., says MP USA has helped her achieve more positive mental health and improved self-esteem. “The effects of postpartum depression and anxiety were removed due to the MP USA meditations I learned,” she said.
