Health Benefits of Regular Exercise
It’s easy for the media to sensationalize the results of scientific studies, often focusing on the negative. Just last month, USA Today published an article about how not exercising poses significant risks to your health.
“Don’t exercise enough?” asked journalist Brett Molina. “It might pose a greater risk to your health than smoking, diabetes or heart disease.”
Molina is referring to research conducted by the Cleveland Clinic between 1991 and 2014. During the course of the 23-year study, researchers followed 122,007 patients who underwent extensive treadmill testing at the clinic to “measure all-cause mortality relating to the benefits of exercise and fitness.”
Based on the study’s results, which were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open on October 19, 2018, “increased cardiorespiratory fitness was directly associated with reduced long-term mortality, with no limit on the positive effects of aerobic fitness.”
According to the CDC, here are some other advantages of regular exercise:
- Weight control
- Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
- Reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- Reduced risk of colon cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and lung cancer
- Stronger bones and muscles

- Improved ability to perform activities of daily living
- Reduced risk of falls
- Increased chance of living longer
That’s an impressive list! And it’s within almost everyone’s reach. “Aerobic fitness is something that most patients can control,” said Dr. Wael Jaber, a cardiologist with Cleveland Clinic and lead author of the study. “And we found in our study there is no limit to how much exercise is too much.”
