You just have to turn on the evening news to see that sexual assault is a major problem in our society. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is coming up in April, and at MP USA, we want to use this opportunity to offer affordable self defense classes for women in Ogden Utah. Below, we will look at what Sexual Assault Awareness Month is about and what you can do to keep yourself safe.
What Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month?
Each April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month, or SAAM, to educate individuals and communities on sexual violence prevention. With help from anti-sexual violence centers around the country, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center coordinates the materials, resources, slogans, and themes.
It’s important that victims, potential victims, and allies speak up to both prevent assault and to share their experiences and therefore help others. Recent slogans have revolved around the theme of making one’s voice heard. Last year’s theme was “Engaging New Voices.” This year, it is “Embrace Your Voice.” Throughout the month of April, there will be events and social media campaigns across the United States to help prevent sexual assault and support survivors.
What You Can Do to Protect Yourself from Sexual Assault
First of all, sexual assault is NEVER the victim’s fault. You should be able to dress how you want to dress, go where you want to go, do what you want to do, and enjoy the same freedoms as every other man or woman without being in fear of sexual assault. Still, there are certain situations that tend to facilitate assaults. Here are some tips that will help you minimize risks:
- On A Date – Make sure friends know where you are. Be firm with your boundaries, and understand that you can withdraw consent at any time. And, leave if your date makes you feel uncomfortable. Your safety is more important than “being polite.”
- When Walking Alone – Choose smart routes. And, keep your feet moving, ears listening, and eyes scanning.
- At Parties – Be ready to help others out by speaking up. Keep close tabs on your consumption of alcohol, and NEVER let your drink out of your sight. And, either stay with friends or inform them of where you are going.
- General Tips – Do not share your plans online. Be prepared when you go out. And, always trust your instincts.
Join Us for Our WUPPASS Seminar
To help women defend themselves against attackers, MP USA has created and perfected Women’s Ultimate Personal Protection and Street Survival (WUPPASS) events. Since 2003, women of every athletic ability, size, and age have used our classes to learn how to stay away from, confront, and disable attackers. Rather than teaching “if this happens, do this” techniques, we take a more holistic approach offering you an arsenal of tools and principles that will work in just about every situation.
We keep the atmosphere fun, upbeat, and positive. And, for the cost of a night out on the town, you come away with tactics that could save your life. In addition to helping more than 800 individuals, we have held workshops in support of Kairos Fitness, Academy Mortgage, Equity Real Estate, Salt Lake Board of Realtors, Layton Kiwanis Club, Ogden YCC, and Northern Utah Women’s Conference. We are also endorsed by the Ogden and Salt Lake Rape Recovery Centers.
Our classes are offered once in April and once in October. The next WUPPASS event is Saturday, April 14th from 3 pm to 6:30 pm. If you sign up now online, you can save $25 off the usual price of $75. Spots are limited so sign up today for self-defense classes for women in Ogden, Utah.
